This is a collage of many elements. I’ve always loved sunflowers and thought it would be cool to do a series of this simple, yet beautiful subject matter. I used paste and stone to create the initial textural elements and then added hand-made rice paper from Indonesia to create the background texture. This painting is raised up in an impasto manner from the surface creating an interesting interplay with light. I’m always fascinated with how light affects the painting based on the changes and intensity. I’ve had many people say to me that the pictures don’t do it justice sometimes because of how much texture and layering I use with the paint and collaging of other materials.
